Powers:
The Stepford Cuckoos share a unique bond that allows them to combine their individual telepathic powers to form a powerful "supermind." The Cuckoos can use their powers to read the minds of others, alter another being's perception of reality, manipulate the thoughts and bodily actions of others, or to shield their minds against telepathic probes. Through their bond, the Cuckoos communicate almost instantaneously, often speaking in unison or finishing one another's sentences. The strength of this bond is based on proximity; the further away they are from one another, the weaker it becomes.
The Cuckoos can block their individual thoughts from each other if they do choose to, but they usually do not and only do under extenuating circumstances. They are weaker this way and dependent on each other emotionally; they end up missing each other's constant presence.
Personality:
At first glance, the Cuckoos seem intimidating and even a bit creepy to other students. And they are intimidating and creepy. They're not like other girls their age, or any girls any age.
Because of their bond, the Cuckoos are so close they sometimes seem to be one person--but they're not.
Phoebe, more or less the most ambitious of the three, is guarded to hide her vulnerability. She comes across as harsh and selfish, but only acts as such to protect herself and her sisters. Mindee is the most out-going and friendly of the three, always quipping and making sly jokes. She plays piano (they all do, because Mindee does, but she's the one who enjoys it) in her spare time. Celeste is the quietest Cuckoo. She likes to keep her thoughts mostly to herself (and her sisters), and spends most of her time reading. She is the most contemplative and self-reflective of the three.
Backgrounder/History:
The Cuckoos were found by Emma Frost, their now-guardian, on the side of the road in Massachusetts about three years ago with no memory to speak of. Emma took them in and nurtured them and their unique talents.
There used to be five Cuckoos, but two of them were killed: Sophie, while resisting her sister Esme's persuasive efforts to take over the power the five sisters held, was killed indirectly by Esme. Mindee, Phoebe and Celeste were then tricked into believing Emma was responsible for their sister's death.
Esme fled her home soon after to join Magneto, who later turned out to be Xorn. After she turned against him, he killed her.
The remaining Cuckoos settled at Xavier's with Emma, searching for a new and uncomplicated life. Their trials brought them closer together, but they are forever bereft without their lost sisters.
Phoebe had a short relationship with Julian Keller--it ended badly of course, because it was with Julian Keller. She was more invested in him than he was with her, yadda yadda yadda...
The Cuckoos are still training and attending class, trying not to let their past haunt them.
